About Newberry Steel

Building the next generation of homes.

Newberry Steel was created with a simple belief: the homes people build today should be stronger, smarter, and better prepared for the future.

Traditional construction has relied heavily on wood and block for decades. While those methods remain common in the United States, steel construction has already become a trusted standard in many parts of the world including Australia, Europe, and New Zealand.

Our founders recognized that steel offers something different. Greater durability. Greater resilience. And a higher standard of construction for homeowners who want their investment to last.

Newberry Steel exists to bring that same level of quality and innovation to modern homebuyers in Florida and beyond.

What makes Newberry Steel different is not just the material, but the people behind it. This is a shared vision built by four partners: Mike Newberry, Chad Newberry, Robert Balch, and Christian Troll. Each brings a distinct expertise across construction, design, and engineering, forming a more complete approach to modern homebuilding.

By combining cold-formed steel framing with streamlined design and prefabricated construction methods, we are creating homes that are stronger, more efficient to build, and designed for the way people live today.

Founder story: from idea to innovation

Built on experience and a better way to build

Newberry Steel was founded by Mike and Chad Newberry, a father and son team with deep experience in residential development and construction, and a shared belief that homes should be built to a higher standard and made to last.

After years of experience in residential development and construction, they began asking a simple question: Why are most homes still built the same way they were decades ago? As builders in Florida, they understood firsthand the impact of climate, durability, and long-term performance. They saw the limitations of traditional wood and block construction and knew there had to be a better, more forward-thinking way to build.

Across the world, steel construction has already become a trusted method for building durable, long-lasting homes. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe regularly use steel framing because of its strength, resilience, and performance over time.

Yet in the United States, wood and block construction still dominate.

Mike and Chad saw an opportunity to change that. They believed homeowners deserved access to stronger materials, smarter building systems, and homes designed for modern life.

As that vision began to take shape, they knew bringing it to life would require the right partners. Partners who shared their standards, their mindset, and their commitment to doing things differently.

During this time, they were working closely with designer Robert Balch, whose early exploration of modular and steel-based construction introduced a new possibility. What began as a design conversation quickly evolved into something much bigger, helping shape the direction and potential of what Newberry Steel could become.

That momentum led to the formation of Newberry Steel, bringing together Mike and Chad’s construction expertise with Robert’s architectural vision and, ultimately, Christian Troll’s engineering and manufacturing experience.

With more than two decades in architectural and structural design and specializing in cold-formed steel systems, Christian adds the technical depth and precision required to scale and execute at a high level.

Together, this partnership created a more complete approach to building, one that combines real-world construction knowledge, design innovation, and advanced steel systems.

That vision became Newberry Steel. A new path forward for homebuilding, where strength, efficiency, and design work together to create homes built to stand the test of time.

Design that sets Newberry Steel apart

One of the defining elements of Newberry Steel is its approach to design.

Robert Balch, founder of Black Box Design and chief designer for Newberry, has spent decades working in both construction and architectural design, beginning his career in the field at just 16 years old.

His hands-on construction background, combined with formal architectural training, allows him to design homes that are not only visually compelling but also highly buildable.

This approach has led to award-winning work and a design philosophy that prioritizes both form and function. Through his collaboration and partnership with Newberry, design and construction are never treated as separate processes, but as one integrated system.

Robert was also an instrumental catalyst behind Newberry Steel. His exploration of modular, prefabricated steel construction introduced the concept that ultimately led the team down this path.

From the Japandi Home to Six in the City and the Dome Home concept, his designs are a key differentiator, setting Newberry Steel apart from others in the space.

Engineering and steel manufacturing expertise

To turn design into reality, Newberry Steel is built on deep engineering and manufacturing knowledge.

One of our partners, Christian Troll brings more than 30 years of experience in architectural and structural design, with over two decades focused specifically on cold-formed steel systems.

His expertise spans design, manufacturing, and construction, allowing him to deliver efficient, code-compliant solutions that are optimized for real-world performance.

With extensive experience in high-wind regions and advanced CNC roll-forming technologies, Christian plays a critical role in ensuring Newberry Steel homes meet rigorous structural standards while maintaining precision and efficiency.

As a partner in Newberry Steel, he brings this expertise directly into the company, helping scale operations and refine the manufacturing process to support long-term growth.

From vision to reality

Turning that vision into reality required more than just an idea. It required the right expertise, the right materials, the right partners, and a unified approach to building.

Steel construction is a specialized discipline. Precision manufacturing, engineering knowledge, and quality control all play a critical role in delivering homes that perform as expected.

To bring their vision to life, the Newberry team partnered with experts, like Robert and Chris, who have spent years refining design and steel engineering for residential home building.

By bringing together residential construction experience, architectural design, and advanced steel engineering, Newberry Steel delivers a more complete solution.

This integrated approach allows for:

  • More efficient construction timelines
  • Greater consistency in quality
  • Reduced long-term maintenance
  • Stronger, more resilient homes

It also creates a more streamlined experience for homeowners, helping simplify what is often an overwhelming process and replacing it with clarity and confidence.

Newberry Steel is led by Mike and Chad Newberry and strengthened by partners Robert Balch and Christian Troll, creating a team that spans construction, design, and engineering.
